Pretty doesn't pay the bills.
DTC sites love to look pretty. Smooth UX, high-polish branding, custom fonts no one can read. Meanwhile, marketplaces like Amazon are racking up sales and crushing conversions.

Your site loses to a Buy Now button.
DTC sites love to look pretty. Smooth UX, high-polish branding, custom fonts no one can read. Meanwhile, marketplaces like Amazon are racking up sales and crushing conversions.
Three reasons:
Trust. Shoppers don't wonder if your site is secure. Amazon already trained them to hit Buy Now without hesitation.
Intent. People don't go to Amazon to browse, they go to buy. That is a conversion machine.
Tech. Amazon built its own infrastructure (logistics, payments, even AI) that other platforms rent years later.
When you are up against that, a clever website is not enough.
Marketplaces force discipline. To rank, you need:
Product pages with syndication-friendly content
Creative assets that drive clicks and conversions
A real strategy for reviews, pricing, and inventory
Meanwhile, DTC sites are still obsessing over hover animations and homepage hero banners.
As AI-powered shopping tools like Rufus creep into search, marketplaces get even more leverage. Imagine asking “What's the best collagen powder?” and getting a product suggestion, a how-to video, and a one-click purchase link, all without leaving Amazon.
That is not far off. When discovery, education, and purchase collapse into one funnel, marketplaces are positioned to own it.
Marketplaces are the backbone of ecommerce. If you are treating them like an afterthought, you are already losing.
